About Rose

Hi! I’m Rose Lagacé, a production designer and filmmaker turned art department blogger based in Toronto, Canada.

I am passionate about bringing insight into the world of production design and the art department for film and television. I’ve been sharing this passion here online with fans and creatives alike since 2009. I’m also a cinephile who loves: designer dresses, holidays wherever I can find great Mid-century modern or Bauhaus architecture, absurd stand-up comedy, and stories about working class heroes and weirdos. Not necessarily all at the same time, but that works too.

Art Departmental is my attempt to help others get excited about production design while learning what we do in the art department. Along the way I expect this website may also tell the story of my own career- from my humble beginnings on micro budget independent films to wherever this daring life takes me. In addition, I believe this blog is a continuation of my own learning process founded at a point when I felt helpless and alone with very few mentors to be found. These days I am determined that no one starting out in the art department ever feel as alone as I did. I’ve spent my entire life trying to express myself visually, and helping others succeed in one form or another, so I think this space reflects that. I thank you for coming along for the ride.
