Interested in working in the Art Department on a feature film or television series? This five-hour, lecture-based workshop will teach you the ins-and-outs of being a set designer.

Section 1: Introduction to Set Design
You will learn the various roles that make up the art department, and what a set designer does. There will be a discussion on the Directors Guild of Canada, as well as what makes for a strong portfolio and candidate. You will also learn what you should expect from entry level positions, including Trainee and 2nd Assistant Art Director, as you begin your art department career.
Section 2: Set Design Practices
You will be taken through the process of designing a set, from scouting a location to overseeing a set build. You will learn about the industry standard software, assembling your art kit, working drawing requirements, as well as the daily tasks and expectations of a set designer.
Section 3: Introduction to the History of Film Design
We want you to leave this workshop not only armed with information, but also feeling inspired. In this final section, you will dive into the world of film design, beginning with the early movie-making pioneers and ending with the masters of contemporary cinema aesthetics.
Sonia Gemmiti is a Montreal-based freelance designer who has worked in the film industry for 8 years in Vancouver and Toronto. Her credits include The A-Team (2010), The Big Year (2011), Robocop (2014), Maps to the Stars (2014), Rookie Blue (2015), Suicide Squad (2016), and Bitten (2016). She was also part of the design team behind Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, nominated for the Art Directors Guild Excellence in Design Award.
Sonia is an award-winning graduate of Sheridan College’s Interior Design program. Prior to moving into film, she worked for some of the top architectural firms in the country, including Dialog and Johnson Chou.
It should also be noted Sonia likes breakfast for dinner, collecting pop-up books, and thinks the greatest piece of production design porn is Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Stefany Koutroumpis pursued her aspiration to work in set design and graduated on the deans list from Ryerson School of Interior Design in 2009. Her debut in the industry coincided with the emergence of a multitude of big budget films being produced in Toronto, and she has since worked on features including Pacific Rim (2013), Robocop (2014), Suicide Squad (2016) and Crimson Peak (2015). Her work on Crimson Peak was featured in Architectural Digest and she received an Art Directors Guild Award nomination for her contribution to excellence in production design. Within the span of these productions, Stefany has earned the title of 1st Assistance Art Director and has been working as such on her current project, the newest installment in the DC Extended Universe Shazam!
While the film industry has been Stefany’s primary focus, she has also freelanced on residential interior design projects and was an environment designer for IDEO, an international design and consulting firm. She hopes to continue developing her skills and creating imaginative environments.
